The holiday season can be a stressful time for pets. Many households are very busy, which creates near constant stimulation – garage doors are opening and closing, doorbells are ringing, excited children wanting to play, food everywhere, and noises of all kinds surround your pet. Unfortunately, there are many potential health problems that can arise during the holidays. Here are a few tips to help you keep your pet healthy during the holidays and throughout the year:
- Make diet changes gradually to avoid gastrointestinal problems. If your dog or cat will be boarding over the holidays, consider bringing his own food so a change is not necessary.
- Remove houseplants from the home if you cannot stop your pet from eating them. Many houseplants, such as the poinsettia, are poisonous and will cause gastrointestinal problems. Lilies are extremely toxic to cats and may cause kidney failure and any ingestion is considered a medical emergency.
- Make sure pets cannot come in contact with candles. Burns happen easily if a pet brushes against a candle and a wagging tail can topple a candle causing a dangerous fire.
- Supervise the introduction of your pet to a visitor’s pet to prevent fights or other problems.
- Food gifts, although wrapped, should not be placed under the tree. Pets may smell the food item and help themselves while you’re not looking!
The doctors and staff of the Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic hope that you and your four-legged friends have an enjoyable and safe holiday season. Please don’t hesitate to call the clinic if you have any questions or concerns regarding your pet’s health. We are always happy to help.
